Listen to the audio-only of videos on your iPhone or iPod Touch

A few people have asked me about releasing an audio version of the “Please start from the beginning…” series. This is definitely a possibility in the future, however in the mean time I’ve found a little trick with the iPhone (or iPod Touch) so that you can listen to the audio of the videos while the phone is locked and you are out and about.

Step 1

Go to iPod and start playing a video

Step 2

Lock your iPhone. The video will stop playing!

Step 3

Double press the home button so that the iPod Rewind-Play-Fastforward options appear, and click Play.

You should now be hearing the audio-only of your video. The cover art being displayed should be the first frame of the video.

Hope that solves a few problems for you guys.

Once you can see the "cover art" (in step 3) you can (bizarrely) click the top-lock button again. This time it won't stop the audio, but will shut your screen off to save power (like it would if you were just listening to an audio podcast/music).

Thanks for pointing that out Paul. I mean't to mention it in the post. :-)

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I just got a new video iPod Touch for Christmas as an upgrade from an older 20GB iPod classic. I like having the video version of podcasts for those times when the podcasters show something interesting on camera. Generally, that's only a very small percentage of the podcast, so most of the time, the video can be off, locked, and in my pocket. I couldn't figure out how to do this and it was driving me nuts. Having it unlocked and in my pocket caused all sorts of interesting results.

That's excellent - thanks. I've recently made the switch from psp to iPod touch and like to 'listen' to movies and tv as I go to sleep. Icould switch the screen off on the psp but didn't know how to do this on my iPod. Much appreciated, thanks again.
